The history of Sydney is long and interesting. Sydney was the site of the first British colony on the continent, established in 1788. However, archaeological evidence suggests that indigenous people have lived in the area of what is now Sydney for 30,000 years.

Many people believe that Australia generally and Sydney specifically were exclusive penal colonies used by the British Empire. While it is true that the first step the British took in and around Sydney was to establish a penal colony, this was not the only activity in the area. Indeed, not long after the establishment of the penal colony, other settlers arrived at the Sydney area. The convicts of the penal colony, however, did play a large part in constructing the early Sydney settlement.

In the late 19th and early 20th century a major gold rush occurred in different parts of Australia, including at Sydney. This brought even more people to the city from England and different parts of the British Empire.
